How would you describe your business in one sentence?
A safe and inclusive local fitness community, where everyone can enjoy high-quality exercise.
What specific challenges does your business help people overcome?
Bourne Fitness helps reduce barriers to exercise and makes high-quality exercise more accessible. Whether you face time constraints, parental responsibilities, or financial reasons, we aim to make regular exercise more achievable. Our mobile gym brings gym-grade equipment to you, our parent-friendly classes welcome babies, and we offer affordable options for all.
When did you launch your business, and who is behind it?
Myself, Nathan Bourne. I founded Bourne Fitness in 2021 after leaving a corporate finance career to prioritise my own well-being.
When did your ‘lightbulb moment’ happen?
During the pandemic, when gyms were closed and people’s health was impacted, I realised the need to bring “the gym” to people and help them prioritise exercise.
What did you do prior to starting your business?
I worked in a corporate role in finance.
What inspired you to launch the business when you did?
The demanding corporate role was a barrier to my fitness. During the pandemic, with gyms closed and many struggling to access quality exercise, I was inspired to bring the gym to the community through a mobile format.
What type of support have you received since starting your business?
The greatest support has come from my family and friends who encouraged me to start the business. Recently, I began business coaching with Beverley Corson, CEO of the Wandsworth Chamber of Commerce, which has been invaluable.
What were three of the biggest challenges you faced when setting up your business?
The main challenges were limited finances for startup costs, balancing the business with a full-time job, and building a brand and reputation from scratch.
If you could start your business over, what would you do differently?
I would take the leap sooner and dedicate full-time energy to building the business, rather than juggling it with a full-time job.
What three pieces of advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs?
- Do your research – thoroughly understand your local area and competitors to stand out.
- Network – connect with local business owners and entrepreneurs to learn from their experiences.
- Look at available funds – explore funding options to support your startup (a step I wish I had taken).
What is your most popular fitness class or service?
Our Saturday morning circuits are the most popular. This high-energy, full-body workout helps members develop weightlifting techniques, improve cardiovascular health, and build muscular endurance. Held outdoors on Tooting Common, it’s a vibrant community event that kick-starts the weekend.
What’s one fitness tip you have for busy business owners?
Make the most of short workouts. Efficient and effective exercise can be achieved in just 30 minutes, so utilise any brief periods for a quick workout.
Finish this sentence: I enjoy being based in Wandsworth because…
… of its diversity. A core value of Bourne Fitness is inclusivity, and we proudly embrace the diverse makeup of our members. As a Black business owner, I champion diversity in all we do.
What’s the latest addition to your fitness business?
We recently opened The Studio, our first indoor fitness facility. This addition allows us to offer both indoor and mobile gym services, including small group classes like boxing, Pilates, and HYROX. We are now the only official HYROX-affiliated gym in SW12.
