Quick Brown Fox
The Quick Brown Fox is an award-winning, fully-fledged video production agency run by husband-and-wife team Victor Castejon & Karina Perdomo, who have been running their business together since 2014.
When did your ‘lightbulb moment’ happen?
Social media was still a relatively new thing, but it was very clear to us that every business and organisation needed compelling videos as part of their marketing efforts. So we decided to lean into each other’s professional strengths: Victor’s creative audiovisual content creation experience and knowledge, and Karina’s network, organisational skills, and natural ability for anything related to social media and the digital world.
What inspired you to start a business together as a couple?
Like many other small business owners, it was the promise of that ever-elusive work/life balance and the freedom to build something that felt like ours. We wanted to step away from the dynamic where mum and/or dad spend extended periods away from home and family.
How has working together strengthened your relationship?
It’s difficult, but not impossible, to maintain a separation between the business and personal relationship. We’d be lying if we said we don’t bring work home and vice versa, but if anything, the juggling act has made our relationship stronger. It’s taught us to listen without judging and to speak promptly and clearly whenever issues arise—or when praise is due!
Share a memorable moment from your journey as business owners.
It has to be the time when our third child decided to arrive the night before one of our biggest projects—a live-stream video production for a large book publishing company. And we delivered! It was quite scary and nerve-wracking, but both the child’s arrival and the live-stream were resounding successes.
What have been some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced as a couple in business?
- If we fall out at home, we cannot fall out in the studio, and vice versa. One thing will always impact the other, but we’ve found that keeping the lines of communication open is key.
- Finding balance: both our roles are valuable and essential to the business. We have to support each other under all circumstances.
- Handling on-the-spot decisions: Who picks up the kids? Who takes time off if they’re ill? Who attends which events, depending on family dynamics?
- Keeping calm, using the systems we’ve put in place, and relying on our personal and professional networks help things run smoothly.
How do you balance running a business with maintaining your relationship?
We genuinely enjoy spending time together—both as business owners and as a couple. We also give each other space and are very understanding of each other’s needs as individuals.#
What lessons have you learned from running a business as a team?
- To trust each other to deliver to the best of our abilities.
- How important it is to set boundaries, both between ourselves and with clients.
- The value of clearly defining each other’s roles.
If you could start again, what would you do differently?
We would have worked on our business, not just in it, earlier on. It’s crucial to invest time and energy into building a business model and strategy—not just completing day-to-day tasks.
What’s one piece of advice you’d give to other couples considering starting a business together?
Keep an open line of communication at all times and establish clear definitions of roles and responsibilities—both in the business and in the household.
What are three tips you’d give to aspiring entrepreneurs?
- Network! Put yourself out there constantly and never hide your knowledge and expertise.
- Create value for potential customers. People buy from people they trust.
- Outsource tasks that don’t come naturally to you. For some, it will be a website; for others, it’s numbers. You don’t have to do everything yourself.
Finish this sentence: I like being based in Wandsworth because…
There is a strong sense of community, plenty of well-maintained green spaces, and it’s a fantastic place to live as a young family. We feel very privileged to be here.
