An evening with Frank Bruno MBE, the former heavyweight champion.

Frank Bruno MBE, started boxing aged nine at Wandsworth Boys Club, near where he grew up with his five brothers and sisters, in Barmouth Street SW18.

After becoming Amateur British Champion at the young age of only 18, Frank turned professional in 1982; his successful career saw him crowned heavyweight champion of the world in 1995, after beating Oliver McCall at a packed Wembley Stadium at the age of 34. In 1990, he was awarded an MBE for his services to boxing.

The former WBC heavyweight champion returns to Wandsworth to talk to journalist Lorna Cooper about his eventful career. From growing up and attending school in Wandsworth to his journey to become world heavyweight champion – and one of Britain’s best-loved sportsmen. Frank will also discuss his struggles with depression, his well-publicised battle with bipolar disorder, how he overcame his challenges and learnt that there is no shame in asking for help.
